DON BOSCO COLLEGE (ARTS AND SCIENCE),, KARAIKAL (DBCASK)is an institute of higher education owned and managed by the South Indian Salesian Society. The Salesians of Don Bosco in India are committed to the holistic growth and development of the young, especially the poor and the less fortunate among them. The Coat of Arms depicted above summarizes the goals and the policies of the institution and the philosophy behind everything that takes place within it. All education tends towards the arriving at the highest of all goals, the Divine Being ‘in whom we live, move and have our being.’ Often referred heavenwards this Being is the source of all illuminations of mind and spirit, the indomitable source of light that illumines the path of knowledge and wisdom. Don Bosco, a saintly man who loved the young with all his heart and soul, committed himself to the task of leading the poor and abandoned youth in this eternal path of unfathomable joy and splendour, through his educative initiatives with his genius of a three dimensional approach:

REASON, the first common note struck by the educator and the educant, becomes the point of departure. Understood as the formation of the ‘Head’, it is represented by the book that lies open at the base. Imparting of information and knowledge leading to INTELLIGENCE is merely the starting point, though it is one of the three essential dimensions.

RELIGION, not merely to do with some creed and related practice, but a set of spiritual convictions that lead to the customs and habits that govern the activities of daily life, is a process understood as the formation of the ‘Hand’. This element represented by the Cross, the institution has the teachings of Christ, the font of the holiness and dedication of Saint John Bosco himself, as the foundation on which all activities are planned and projects initiated. It depends very much on the INITIATIVE of the individual educant to take to heart the opportunities offered towards a deeper understanding and holistic transformation of one’s life.

LOVING KINDNESS is the methodology used to enlighten, enthuse and empower the educant towards assuming responsibility for oneself and the society. Not limiting to the expression of genuine Christ-inspired love towards the educant, the process inspires a love within the person towards oneself, those around and towards the society and the world at large; in short it challenges the person towards a spiritual INTEGRITY, by means of the formation of the ‘Heart’ and obviously it is represented by the heart.

Thus in forming the heart, the hand and the head, with the three key elements proposed by Don Bosco’s reason, religion and loving kindness through INTELLIGENCE, INITIATIVE and INTEGRITY become the foundation of everything that happens at Don Bosco College, Karaikal.
